What Is Compounding? Custom Medications From Your Clemson, SC Pharmacy

August 4, 2026

Every August, thousands of students arrive in Clemson ready to start a new semester. Whether they are freshmen moving into the dorms for the first time or returning students settling back into their routines, one thing often gets pushed to the bottom of the pre-semester checklist: immunizations.

Getting vaccinated before classes begin protects you and the people around you. At Hubbard Young Pharmacy on College Avenue, we make it simple to check that box before fall semester kicks off.

Which Vaccines Do College Students Usually Need?

Clemson University, like most universities, recommends or requires certain vaccines for students living on campus or spending time in close-contact settings. Here are the immunizations that come up most often:

Meningococcal (MenACWY): Students living in dormitories face a higher risk of bacterial meningitis. Most universities require proof of this vaccine for on-campus housing, and many require a booster for students who received their first dose before age 16.

Flu Shot: Flu season arrives right as fall classes hit full stride. Getting vaccinated in August or September means you are protected before the virus starts circulating through lecture halls and common areas.

Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis): A booster is typically recommended if more than 10 years have passed since the last dose. Students in health-related programs often need documentation of this before clinical rotations.

MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella): Students are generally required to show proof of two doses before enrollment. This is one of the most commonly missing vaccines we see at back-to-school time.

Hepatitis B: Often required by universities, especially for students enrolled in nursing, pre-medicine, or other health-related programs. The series requires multiple doses, so starting early matters.

HPV: Recommended for young adults who did not complete the series during adolescence. The CDC recommends catching up through age 26.

Why Get Vaccinated at Hubbard Young Instead of a Chain?

Walk into a large chain pharmacy and you may feel like a number. At Hubbard Young, you are a neighbor. Our pharmacists know the community, take time to answer your questions, and can review your current medications before administering any vaccine to catch potential interactions.

We have been serving the Clemson community since 1998. That kind of long-term relationship with patients is something the big chains simply cannot offer.

Here is what you can expect when you visit us for immunizations:

  • Walk-in availability for most vaccines
  • Fast service with most visits taking 15 minutes or less
  • Insurance billing handled on-site
  • Online booking available for scheduled appointments
  • Knowledgeable pharmacists who take time to answer your questions

What to Bring to Your Appointment

A little preparation makes the visit quick and easy. Come in with:

  • Your insurance card
  • A photo ID
  • Your vaccination records, if you have them
  • A list of any current medications or supplements

If you are unsure which vaccines you still need, bring whatever records you have and one of our pharmacists will help you figure out what is missing. We would rather you come in with questions than skip a vaccine because you were uncertain.

A Note for Parents

If your student is heading to Clemson and you are managing their health prep from out of state, give us a call. We can walk you through what is available, answer billing and insurance questions, and help you understand what Clemson University recommends before your student ever walks in the door.

Move-in weekend is already a lot to coordinate. Getting immunizations sorted in advance is one less thing to worry about on that day.
