Variety of dietary supplements, including capsules of Garlic, Evening Primrose Oil; Artichoke Leaf; Olive Leaf; Magnesium and Omega 3 Fish Oil. Selective focus. Taken in daylight.

A study that consisted of over 10,000 people who take dietary supplements, demonstrated which type of supplements were being used the most. Upon conclusion of that study, researchers saw that pre-workout supplements, Vitamin D, Caffeine Extract, Magnesium, and CoQ10 were the most commonly used supplements. In this post, we take a deeper look into the benefits that they provide.

1) Caffeine Extract

It’s a well-known fact that coffee is one of the most popular types of beverages that people drink. Studies suggest that they are popular in their supplement form as well. One of the reasons why this may be the case could stem from the fact that caffeine can help to boost athletic performance.

In fact, studies show that it can help to provide a 10% boost in ‘muscle explosiveness’, as to what many gym enthusiasts call a “super-training” effect. In order for you to reap the benefits of caffeine, experts suggest that you should consume 3-9 mg of caffeine daily. This equates to 235 to 735 mg for an individual who weighs 180 pounds.

2) Pre-Workout Supplements

Pre-Workout supplements are extremely popular because they help to boost mental focus, energy levels and ‘muscle promptitude’ during workout sessions. A recent study that was published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, found that individuals who used a pre-workout supplement before the gym were able to conduct more reps as well as to sprint longer than guys who did not take a pre-workout supplement.

A single capsule of this type of supplement is usually packed with molecules and minerals which help to build muscle and boost energy. When it comes to using the right kind of pre-workout supplement, some of the key ingredients you should look for include: L-tyrosine, L-arginine and BCAA.

3) Vitamin D

Vitamin D is another popular supplement that retains its ranking year after year for being one of the most commonly used supplements out there. Studies show that Vitamin D can help to improve a wide range of conditions and ailments such as metabolic syndrome, tuberculosis, liver disease, type 1 diabetes and poor bone health. However, the interesting thing about this vitamin is that our bodies are able to extract it from the rays of the sun. As such, individuals who require this supplement, simply need to get more sunshine instead.

4) Magnesium

Statistics indicate that as much as 47% of people within the United States, do not consume an adequate amount of magnesium in their diet. So, it comes as no surprise as to why it remains a popular choice amongst supplement lovers. Magnesium is commonly used to help improve sleep quality, anxiety and to relieve the symptoms of migraine headaches as well.

5) CoQ10

While it may sound like a name that was given to a Star Wars droid, CoQ10, short for Coenzyme Q10 is actually a nutrient that helps our body to convert food into energy. It is also classified as being a potent antioxidant that can be beneficial to heart health. It can help to reduce inflammation and increase HDL (good) cholesterol too. However, the most commonly reported reason for using this nutrient is the fact that it helps to alleviate muscle pain.
